Comments About This Park
Dennis Barton (8/3/2012): We read about this park in an article by John Unger in a publication called "Destination Montrose Summer/Spring 2012. We followed his directions (5 mi south of Montrose on 550, left on Uncompahgre Road which becomes Buckhorn Road to the Buckhorn Lakes Recreation Area. His description of a nice road with Aspen trees, wooded complex of small lakes and a network of short trails was very inviting. Unfortunately, we never saw any of that. We drove on Buckhorn Lakes Road until the only signage on entire drive said No Trespassing...Private Property. Since the City of Montrose has an aversion to putting up any informational signs as to how visitors may reach its trails and parks perhaps the next article by Mr. Unger will include the lattitude and longitude so that visitors can find what is probably a lovely facility through the use of a GPS. sutton white rock (4/22/2014): You can cast away your cares at Buckhorn Lake! The lake is home to largemouth and Kentucky bass, crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, and muskie. Hikers can explore the natural beauty and resources of Buckhorn Lake with a stroll along a 1.5 mile, self-guiding, moderately strenuous walking trail. (report as inappropriate)
Susan Haines (11/11/2014): We attempted to go to these lakes, but you need a four wheel drive vehicle or at least a high clearance vehicle to make it all the way! We had to turn around and go back down before getting to the park. Sad!! (report as inappropriate)
Sherie (10/19/2015): We made this trip 9/2015, you really need a 4-wheel drive to get there. Another person referenced the "no trespassing sign-that is just for anywhere off the "road" since that portion is a private ranch. We almost turned back but then saw a small pond and a stream and knew we were getting close. We came to an antennae station and that's when we actually started entering the 'park'--just a few hundred feet past that is the sign. Then the road got really scary with ruts, boulders, and it's slow going for sure if you don't want to tear up the carriage of your vehicle! We started to see folks with ATV's and it seems that's the real draw of this place. There are primitive picnic sites and the ability to put a canoe or kayak on the lake. It was beautiful. Worth the trip to be somewhere that's not groomed and full of tourists and crammed with families. Be a good visitor and pack out all of your trash if you go and don't look for any outhouses because we sure didn't see any. (report as inappropriate)
